AbstractHistoryArchive Description

The texts are from interviews with and writing by Australian-Kurds from all parts of Kurdistan, portraying the history, culture, religions, life and struggles of the Kurdish people, and their refugee experience.

Notes

  • From the Editors Introduction: 'My interest in Kurdish people goes back to 1991, when I first heard about their plight in northern Iraq. It developed in 1994 when Michelle James, a woman who lived next to a Kurdish refugee family in Melbourne, asked me to do some research for a documentary. My interviews with Kurds from northern Iraq became a series of three radio documentaries for the ABC. The stories haunted me for four years, so it seemed they deserved a book. [...] Over three years I interviewed people and connected with others who wrote their own essays or short stories either in Kurdish, Arabic or English. The criterion for selection was that all contributors had to be residing in Australia' (pp.17, 18)
