BiographyHistory

Halstead Press began as Angus & Robertson's book-printing department. Prior to 1923 Angus & Robertson's publications were printed by various outside firms. For several months in 1923, Angus & Robertson ceased publishing owing to high increase in the cost of printing and binding books; they resumed publishing when a controlling interest was acquired in a printing firm, Eagle Press Limited. By 1928 all their books were being printed by Eagle Press which was renamed in 1929 Halstead Printing Company Limited after George Robertson's native village in Essex, England. In 1937 the printing concern was incorporated as a proprietary company and became known as Halstead Press Pty Ltd.

'In the 1970s, after a corporate takeover, Halstead stopped printing and became a publishing imprint, Robertson's great grandson having acquired the logo and identity. These he passed on to the present company when it was set up in 1991. In 2008, Halstead continues the tradition, as one of the longest established independent book publishers in Australian ownership. ... Early in 2008 it established an office in Canberra [Australian Capital Territory]'.
