The Herberton Advertiser began publication on 16 November 1881, when Dr E. Myers re-named The Cairns Advertiser and Smithfield Observer and moved it to Herberton.

1877Cairns:Edward Rhode,1877Z15053821877newspaper The Cairns Advertiser and Smithfield Observer began publication as Cairns' first newspaper on 21 April 1877 by the proprietors Hill, Byrne, and Edward Rhode. 'After a short term,' the newspaper was purchased by Dr. E. Myers, who closed the Cairns plant on 24 September 1881 and shifted it to Herberton where the newspaper resumed in November as The Herberton Advertiser.

Friends of the former proprietor, Dr Myers, have offered him the Miner, but the writer doubts the district could support more than one newspaper.
