The Herberton Advertiser began publication on 16 November 1881, when Dr E. Myers re-named The Cairns Advertiser and Smithfield Observer and moved it to Herberton.

y separately published work icon The Cairns Advertiser and Smithfield Observer Dodd Smith Clarke (editor), 1877 Cairns : Edward Rhode , 1877 Z1505382 1877 newspaper The Cairns Advertiser and Smithfield Observer began publication as Cairns' first newspaper on 21 April 1877 by the proprietors Hill, Byrne, and Edward Rhode. 'After a short term,' the newspaper was purchased by Dr. E. Myers, who closed the Cairns plant on 24 September 1881 and shifted it to Herberton where the newspaper resumed in November as The Herberton Advertiser.

— Appears in: The Cairns Post , 1 April 1886; (p. 2) Herberton, 26 March: The goodwill and material of the Herberton Advertiser were sold to Mr John Green, an employee of the paper, although it is understood the actual purchasers were Messrs Green and Andrew Pasley. Friends of the former proprietor, Dr Myers, have offered him the Miner, but the writer doubts the district could support more than one newspaper.

The writer concludes that the 'little bit of Press interference will net the school over £125, and yet they growl at the fourth estate'.
