The Cairns Advertiser and Smithfield Observer began publication as Cairns' first newspaper on 21 April 1877 by the proprietors Hill, Byrne, and Edward Rhode. 'After a short term,' the newspaper was purchased by Dr. E. Myers, who closed the Cairns plant on 24 September 1881 and shifted it to Herberton where the newspaper resumed in November as The Herberton Advertiser.

A lengthy paragraph in praise of Dr Myers, the editor of the Cairns Advertiser, who moved his paper from Cairns to Herberton in 1881. The writer commends Dr Myer's belief in Cairns and its future and his willingness to criticise where necessary, describing him as 'resolute and fearless' in defending the welfare of the town. Contrary to the opinion of some, the writer sees the departure of the Cairns Advertiser as a great loss to Cairns.
