The book opens with the three poems selected as joint winners of the World Congress of Poets Poetry Competition, 2000. The anthology then provides short essays on poetry from thirty-four countries or regions from around the globe. The contributors to this section include: Assad Cina, Martha Herrera, Juan Garrido, Ouyang Yu, Mirjana Majic, Zanne Jappe Mallett, Terry Pazmino, Penelope Grace, Irina Spinadel, Angelika Fremd, Vrasidas Karales, Anita Barar, Lizz Murphy, Ruth Lewin, Salvatore Pizzo, Phillip Yoon, Mario Licon, Robert Sullivan, Alistair Paterson, Marit Breivik Andersen, Arif Sadiq, Ludwika Amber, Nora Krouk, Mari Paz Ovidi, Henry Delson Kumarapperuma, Birgitta Sharpe, Ferit Berk, Helen Boris, Courtney Williamson, and John Bennett.

  • From the Introduction by Robyn Ianssen: The aim of the World Congress of Poets in Sydney in 2000 is to bring together people in Australia who write in many languages and present their work to the general population. This anthology, Many Voices aims to awaken us all to the rich world heritage we have at our very fingertips here in Australia. It is part of us! -- p.5.

    The Sydney committee of the World Congress of Poets was formed in December 1998 ... Valuing our World Poetic Heriage is our third function, to be followed by our international congress in October 2001 -- p.6.
