An old miner, a young squatter, and a sickly youth work gold claims side by side in the bush. The squatter alone has no luck and determines to murder the old miner - but only in his will is the full tragedy revealed. (PB)

Peter Dowling is transported to Van Diemen's Land for sheep-stealing, vowing to escape. He is assigned to Captian Griffith (old Rasper) who uses his keen eye in opossum hunting. Dowling escapes and lives in the bush for months, escapes from capture once, is betrayed at last but is placed in the police service. Competent but, apart from the subject matter, not unusual. (PB)
Tale of the journey from Wilcannia to Palmerston with a mob of sheep and a hundred horses made by two brothers from Colac, Victoria and the wife of the elder brother. On their march toward the Yam Creek gold-rush the younger brother is killed by their Aboriginal guide, and the wife dies soon after arriving at Palmerston with her husband. (PB)
Recounts the lonely drowning of a young man attempting to visit a local girl and her family near the goldfields where he ran a business. The narrator was a squatter. (PB)
Tale told by an acquaintance met on the road to Kiama between Shoalhaven and Gerrigong of his days as a convict. Recounts the sufferings of three convicts also employed on a station in the Shoalhaven district years before - who ultimately drew straws to decide which of them should be murdered, who should kill him and so be hung; and who should turn queen's evidence and be pardoned.
