Pratt considers the narrative convergence of popular romance and Bildungsroman in The Getting of Wisdom and shows how each genre "structures its narrative meaning through the representation of gender". Pratt argues that Laura's development is not stablized by gender and the resulting narrative, while at times matching romance or Bildungsroman, does not produce a strong structure for either, reflecting Richardson's rejection of those genres as recepticles of her own story.
