Notes

  • Contains section, 'Men of the Month', which comprises brief biographical notes with accompanying portraits of notable individuals from various professions. This issue includes George Robertson 'of the bookselling and publishing firm of Angus & Robertson, Sydney', and, expatriate writer, Frederic Manning (qq.v.), who was 'paying a visit to Sydney, his native city.' According to the report Manning had been living in England since 1898.
  • Includes a brief report noting that there 'was a big crowd at the Prince Edward Theatre on January 15th to see the private screening of the talkie, Two Minutes' Silence, which was produced by the McDonagh Sisters at their studio in Centennial Park.' The film adaptation was based on Leslie Haylen's anti-war play which was staged in Sydney in 1930. (content appears in the Sydney 'Personal and Social' column)
  • Contains a brief reference to English barrister and writer, Philip Guedalla (1889-1944), who was known for his witty epigrams. The piece reports that he was speaking on the topic of 'Biography' and includes a Guedalla quote about D. H. Lawrence (q.v.).   • Includes reference to Angela Thirkell (q.v.) who 'has a novel ready to be issued by Hamish Hamilton in January. It is a study of present-day life and bears the excellent title, Ankle Deep.' (content appears in topical column, 'This, That and Them' by London correspondent T. H. Cochran)
  • Contains the monthly column 'The Bibful', by E. J. Francis, which comprises entirely of an untitled piece of prose. Written in the style of a sketch, the humorous piece is about raising funds for charities and a character called 'Abcorn'.
  • Includes section, 'Hard Lines' (by G. G.), which reports that American poet, Ogden Nash (1902-1971), 'has assembled his most notable verses in a book called Hard Lines. Noting that 'the eccentric versifier...contributes to... the New Yorker, the most amusing paper in the English language.' Includes a number of untitled extracts from Nash's poetry.
