  • A death notice in the same issue of the Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser in which this poem is first published announces the death '[a]t Liverpool, on the 2nd instant [2 December 1838], of influenza, Jane Henrietta, the infant daughter of Mr. F. E. Forbes.' This may be the child that is the subject of this poem. There was an epidemic of influenza in Sydney in November and December 1838.
