While primarily an examination of the conditions in which the Greek diasporic community in Australia developed, with little reference to literature, the article does cite the oral lament composed in the early 20th century in Australia: 'Australia is an island where you can sail with ease, but once you go and settle there it's difficult to leave' (31).
The author considers 'the way the people of Greek background have influenced culture in Australia, not only in the maintenance and remaking of Greek culture but also the ways in which the dominant English speaking culture itself has been influenced by the Greeks in its midst or the Greeks of its imagination.'
