After his uncle's death, Harry Gilder takes ownership of a ketch, the Bridget B., which he renames the Ina. The ketch is chartered by a man named Jamieson and his colleague Albot, for a trip to Tofumira, 300 miles north of Fiji. Harry invites his friend, Norman, along, intending to 'combine business with pleasure'.

On the journey, Harry discovers onboard a letter from his uncle that outlines a legacy of valuable pearls hidden on the island, of which Jamieson and Albot are aware. A battle ensues for the recovery of the pearls and a safe return to Melbourne.

Frank Piddington makes an error of judgement and chooses not to own up to having thrown a ball of paper across the classroom. Although he feels guilty, he maintains his silence until after he secures the final goal to win the Schools' Football Competition match for Whitecliff Grammar School against Culverhouse. When his guilt overwhelms him, he approaches his teacher with an admission and apology. His teacher informs him that he already had 'a good idea' about who had thrown the paper, and suggests to Piddington that he 'will realise when [he is] older that it is not so hard to find a guilty person as it looks'.

When an old prospector dies, he leaves Bob Ward not only with clues to a stash of newly discovered gold, but also an incomplete warning of danger in approaching it. When Ward's farmhand, McShaine, heads off first to find the gold, it is he who becomes the victim of the trap on the treasure chest.

Sitting around their campfire at the diggings, a group of men hear a large corroboree nearby. One of the men is asked to tell a story about 'those savage indians of [the Ohio River]' so that this group might be more 'kindly disposed towards these harmless natives of ours'. Fred Walker recounts his pursuit and capture by 'the Indians', and rescue by his friend, Uriah Bird.

A boarding school story in which the boys decide to hold a concert. They mistake a thief for a colleague dressed as Bill Sykes, ensure he participates in the concert, and, to their subsequent shock, release him to continue his burlary.

A school story about private school competition and the Head of the River boating race. On his way to crew for St. Andrew's, Frank stops to assist a St. Virgil's crew-member whose motor bike has broken down and would otherwise not make it to the race. The competition is fierce but St. Andrews and St. Virgil's tie. Before the boys can be awarded their medals, though, Frank must save his young brother from drowning.

Three proud bullfrogs argue about who is the 'chief of [the] pond'. While they are fortunate to escape the crane's hungry beak, the crane is taken by a fox. This short story ends with a moral: 'It is not a wise thing to boast too loudly'.

A story about a Baker-That-Baked-Gingerbread and the Fool-Who-Did-What-He-Was-Told. Perhaps the fool is not so silly after all. While the baker thinks his gingerbread camels, tigers and pigs are foolish, they are very popular with their customers.

Mary and Billy meet the Water-Lily Fairy in the lake at the Gardens. She transforms them to fairy-size and takes them to meet the Fairy Queen, who requests that they ask the mortals to not pluck their water-lily homes.
