Josie Lockwood is engaged to Tom Raynor, nephew of Miss Miriam Isabel Montrose, the formidable Principal at the school where Josie teaches music. Josie and Tom have quarrelled and Josie's pride prevents her making up with him, until Miss Montrose speaks forcefully to her.

Violet Verona is the heroine in a travelling theatre company. The brooding comedian, Max Grove, has declared his love for her, but they have quarrelled and Violet has developed murderous feelings towards him. When the building they are playing in is swept away in a flood she discovers Max's true character.

The author argues being in love is a desire for possession and that women must avoid infatuation at all costs, rather they should learn to use a range of techniques to make a man fall in love with them. Flirtation is seen as a means to practise these techniques and 'A Gentlewoman' advises embarking on as many flirtations as possible.
