Ione Fryar was born in Brisbane, the eldest of a family of six. Her father was born in Adelaide and her mother in Gympie, the daughter of Widgee Shire Council chairman and member James Fraser, originally of Inverness, Scotland. Fryar was named for a Spanish forbear and she placed considerable emphasis on her Spanish ancestry.
Fryar was educated at Bulimba State School until she was eight. The family then moved to a farm at the Two Mile, an outlying district of Gympie, where she attended the local school until she left at age thirteen.
Apart from producing a few 'prize essays' while she was at school, Fryar did not begin writing until several years after her formal education ceased. The Australian Woman's Mirror claims her as a 'Mirror discovery' and she published many poems and several short stories in the magazine, beginning in 1926 and extending into the 1950s.
