This series of over 100 interviews is part pf the National Library's Maltese-Australian Folklife and Social History Project. The main interviewer for the project is Dr Barry York, a specialist in Australian immigration history. After nearly two decades' experience in the field, he believes he has developed a methodology that suits the postwar migrant groups: 'There are five basic fields of enquiry', he said. 'Firstly, the experience of the homeland. The migrant's life did not begin with disembarkation in Australia. Then there are the reasons for emigration and the choice of Australia as a destination. The experience of the voyage can also be captured by oral history. Fourthly, there's the whole area of settlement experiences: work, play, family, community involvement, and so on. And finally there's the question of ethnic identity: how does the interviewee regard himself or herself today?' Only those interviews relating to literary figures have been individually indexed.
