Based upon the novels by Western Australian author Tim Winton, the series revolves around 12-year-old Lockie Leonard, a surf rat whose family moves to the most remote town on Earth, Angelus. Lockie's convinced that this is a total disaster. He has no friends, a new school, and a house that is truly in danger of disappearing into a swamp. But then Lockie spots the one thing that makes it all okay. This weird little town has the best surf he has ever seen.

Dumped by his girlfriend, he's back to being the loneliest kid in town until he makes friends with the wierdest human being he's ever met. As if that isn't enough, Lockie decides to save his town from industrial pollution. In the middle of all this the inevitable happens - yes, he falls in love: he drops like a ton of bricks for a girl who's not even out of primary school yet, and to make matters worse she surfs better than he ever will. Works about this Work

Little Breaks Sarah Walker , 2022 single work essay
— Appears in: The Monthly , September 2022; (p. 42-44)
'ONCE WE’VE PEELED OFF the wetsuits and packed up the boards, we are quiet. The car ride home is scored with the sound of sniffing, as though in grief, though it is really the ocean emptying out of our sinuses. There is no need for speech. It is a soft quiet, a golden quiet. In the driver’s seat, my partner is thinking about his turns, the way he twisted his body to pull the board against the wave, flitting up the fist of the sea. Next to him, I am thinking about how, one day, I might be able to stand up without screaming. I am what surfers refer to as a kook, which is to say: I am terrible at surfing. In every possible way, I am an embarrassment to the art of standing on the ocean. I was terrible at it when I started, and I am terrible at it now, and I love it.' (Introduction)
