'Friars, End Lane. This is the address of twelve-year-old Angela Read during the time she and her family spend in England. Nothing could be more of a contrast to her suburban Australian home than this picturesque house outside the ancient village of Hadlow.
'While exploring the village, with its flintstone cottages and church overlooking the green, Angela finds a time-worn memorial to a girl her own age who had died three hundred years before. To discover who she was and where she belonged becomes Angela's preoccupation.
There is also a mysterious boy, very much alive, whose behaviour frightens Angela. She comes to know and understand him through practical and forthright Lily. Lily helps run a hand printing press, and she begins to teach Angela the workings of that fascinating craft. As her skills and self-confidence grow, Angela begins to feel that she too has a place in Hadlow.'
