The editor, in her Foreword, remarks that although the advertisement soliciting contributions for this volume 'did not stipulate that the stereotype of libraries and librarians was to be contested, it is interesting to note that many of the writers - particularly those who have worked in libraries - do, in fact, project a very different image of libraries and library personnel' (vii).
