Because his short sightedness was undetected at school, Strandgard was largely self-educated. He began writing poetry late in life whilst working nights as an operating theatre technician, after having worked in factories and serving in the army. He has published widely both here and overseas. Four of his plays, Hello (1990), Massacre (1991), My Prince (1998), and There He Is (1999) are in the collection of the Australian Script Centre in Hobart. Other plays are listed in Who's Who of Australian Writers (1995) but were not traced. Many of his poems reflect his interest in Amnesty International, oriental arts and martial arts (which he also taught).
