'It was a cloudless summer day in the year 1900. Everyone at Appleyard College for Young Ladies agreed it was just right for a picnic at Hanging Rock. After lunch, a group of three girls climbed into the blaze of the afternoon sun, pressing on through the scrub into the shadows of the secluded volcanic outcropping. Farther, higher, until at last they disappeared. They never returned. ...'

— Appears in: Australian Book Review , July vol. 4 no. 9 1965; (p. 162)
Joan Lindsay remembers visiting the author Angela Thirkell at the latter's home in Malvern, Victoria, and meeting her again a few years later at Professor Orme Masson's house at Melbourne University. Lindsay dates her first meeting with Thirkell as during World War I but it was probably in the early 1920s.

1 2 y separately published work icon Time Without Clocks Joan Lindsay , Melbourne : Cheshire , 1962 Z305491 1962 single work autobiography

'Time Without Clocks is Joan Lindsay’s charming and evocative autobiographical novel. It tells the story of her marriage to Sir Daryl Lindsay, of their life in Melbourne in the twenties and thirties, of their travels in Europe, and above all the gentle world of ‘Mulberry Hill’, a house without clocks.

'Revealed in this delightful reminiscence is Joan Lindsay’s fascination with the ambiguities of time, seen by some as the key to the mysteries of Picnic at Hanging Rock.'
