This newspaper publishing firm established by John Fairfax (q.v.), initially in partnership with Charles Kemp, continued as a family company for a hundred years. It became a limited company in 1916 and a proprietary company in 1937. In 1956 it was succeeded by the public company John Fairfax Ltd. Also known as John Fairfax Group Pty Ltd, the company went into receivership in December 1990 after a take-over bid from Warwick Fairfax and in 1991 English newspaper proprietor Conrad Black made a successful bid for John Fairfax Holdings Ltd.
