BiographyHistory

After serving an apprenticeship in the printing trade, John Fairfax worked for the London Morning Chronicle and later acquired ownership of the Leamington Spa Chronicle and the Leamington Chronicle. Legal proceedings against him for libel resulted in insolvency and a decision to emigrate to Australia. He purchased the Sydney Mail in 1841, in partnership with Charles Kemp. Called the Sydney Morning Herald from 1 August 1842, this was to become the flagship of a major Australian newspaper publishing group, John Fairfax & Sons (q.v.).
