AbstractHistoryArchive Description

An autobiographical story narrated by the author about travel experiences in Fiji, as the guest of a US Peace Corps volunteer who lives near the town of Lautoka (on the island of Viti Levu, not named in the story). The narrator makes observations about what he sees as he travels through this island by car and bus, including both descriptions of place and social commentary on the relationship between Fijian Indians and Indigenous Fijians, as he perceives it. He also describes a drinking session with some Fijian youths, who share their yaqona with him, in exchange for some of his beer.

Notes

  • Published under the name 'Krzysztof Jurewicz'. Krzysztof is the Polish version of 'Christopher'.
  • The title refers to a word presented in the story as a Fijian term for white people (p. 201). The word is used by some Fijian boys about the narrator.
