AbstractHistoryArchive Description

'A powerful debut from an extraordinary voice, gentle in the face of extremity

'Khin's sister Theda has a strange illness. Her doctor thinks it's purely physical, and so does she, but Khin is not so sure. He knows what they both went through growing up in Perth – it wasn't welcoming back then for a Burmese-Australian family.

'With Theda's condition getting worse, Khin heads off to the United States. He needs to sort things out with his ex-partner. Once there, events take a very odd turn, and he finds himself in court.

'Fragile Creatures is a family story told with humour, wonderment and complete honesty. This is a book about what happens when realities clash – it's about care, truth and the hardest choices. It will sweep you up and leave you stunned at its power.' (Publication summary)

'Our public debates are often marked by hostility and exclusion. Many of them touch on identity, and seem to say more about the protagonists than about the issues. Underlying and adding to the heat of such debates are questions about Australian identity. Can a Muslim, a Jew, an opponent or supporter of Israeli actions in Gaza, be regarded as authentically Australian, for example? Though the debates are usually vituperative in tone and simplistic in argument, they raise, however, deeper questions about why they start and what fuels their energy.' (Introduction)

'“[A]T MANY LEVELS of human interaction there is the opportunity to conflate discomfort with a threat, to mistake internal anxiety for exterior danger, and in turn to escalate rather than resolve.” These words by American writer Sarah Schulman, from her book Conflict Is Not Abuse, are on my wall, scribed onto a yellow sticky-note next to a dozen others. I’m drawn to these words – again – after finishing Khin Myint’s Fragile Creatures, imagining this memoir’s brave and careful weight, the author’s gentle footfall joining Schulman at the centre of an out-of-control' (Introduction)

'A stockpile of Nembutal, a mysterious chronic illness, entrenched schoolyard bullying, overt racism, at least one failed relationship, and intergenerational trauma. These are all in the opening pages of Khin Myint’s debut memoir, Fragile Creatures. He lets the reader know what’s coming.' (Introduction)

'Fragile Creatures, a debut from Perth-based writer Khin Myint, delivers a telling insight when the author is a long way from home, feeling vulnerable and lonely. Myint is in Syracuse in the United States. He has just walked through an impoverished Black “ghetto” and encountered a drug addict beneath an overpass. He returns to the house where he is staying and calls his mother in Perth. After listening to his experience, Myint’s mother replies, “Life is luck, Khin … we could have ended up like that if we’d been born into the same circumstances.”'
