Author note: Based upon the events of Monday August 5 1987, when Australian submarine HMAS Otama dived ten nautical miles south-east of Sydney, leaving on the surface two sailors who had been working in the conning tower. The bodies of Seaman Damien Humphreys, 19, and Able Seaman Hugh Markcrow, 24, were never recovered.
