Steampunk note: This story is collected in an anthology of steampunk stories. One of the central characters is a woman made of bronze and brass, one what are called 'The Returned': she was born human, but then, before a congenital condition could kill her, remade as a machine. The setting is alien and far-future, rather than Victorian.
