AbstractHistoryArchive Description

A series of works set in what has come to be called the 'Red Sun world'–Ben Peek notes in an interview with Shimmer magazine that the name was applied by 'someone online, I'm not sure who now', rather than by him.

Of the Red Sun world, he says:

The basic idea of the Red Sun world is that everyone in it is living in a end of world time in a vague, steampunk, weird science scenario. There’s environmental decline, social and moral decline, and a remapping of professions. In an odd way, the doctors of the Broken City are still faithful to the original idea of their profession, but of course, they work in a giant underground hospital that may or may not also be functioning as an ark that will provide them with survival when everything above goes real bad.

The Red Sun stories are strongly Australian in focus and theme.

Notes

  • Steampunk note: as noted in the interview above, Ben Peek envisions the world of the Red Sun stories as a 'vague, steampunk, weird science scenario'. One common element running through the stories is the concept of 'The Returned': a person's living memories can be implanted on corpses (reinforced with a bronze skeleton), technically allowing them to live forever.
