AbstractHistoryArchive Description

In his preface to At Sea, Hal Stone writes:
The idea of being the first in the field, or sea, originated during a conversation between Chas W. Heins and I. Asking if such a nautical magazinelette had ever been issued by any American amateur, and being assured in the negative, preparations were at once made to have Australia hold this honour.
The magazinelette comprises extracts from the Captain's Log, along with a selection of poems and prose pieces contributed by Stone, several members of the American Amateur Press Association, and writers from England and Australia. The contributors include: Charles W. Heins, Alice Heins, Louis E. Bisch, Foster Gilroy, M. Effie Lee, Dr Ed. B. Swift, Fred J. Cousins, Martin C. Brennan and Frank L. T. Wilmot.

Notes

  • Stone's concluding 'Log' notes that 'the whole of the issue could not be printed on the little press built for [him] by Fred Farrar, a bright American-English boy, but [that] the best has been done.' In terms of the sea voyage back to Australia, Stone further records that he returned via England, France, Italy, Colombo, Egypt etc, finally arriving at Melbourne (without a penny).
