This series of letters, to the editor of the
Australasian Chronicle, is written in a prose style initially with humour. The first three letters are based on the characters of 'John Tobias' and 'The Hermit in New South Wales' - both pseudonyms of the author.
The correspondence pursues increasingly serious topics including the state of labour and the economy in New South Wales and the disadvantage of the white settlers born in the colony of gaining employment in the public service.
