The Long Arm centres on an unidentified department of the Victoria Police headed by Inspector Dallas Buchanan. The cases involve all manner of crimes including those which would normally be handled by other specialist units.

  • Andrew Pike and Ross Cooper note in Australian Film: 1900-1977 that the film Stone originated as an idea for an episode of The Long Arm: after the cancellation of The Long Arm, actor Sandy Harbutt restructured the idea as a feature film.
