It points out that Phùng Nhân described the fate of a family in a remote southern area as a way to portray the history of Vietnam's 'south marching', or southern expansion. Phùng Nhân utilises the language of Vietnamese southern peasants and therefore maintains this form of the Vietnamese language in Australia.
