This work is a collections of interviews with publishers of small independent magazines. All interviewees were asked a series of questions beginning with: 'Please describe your magazine's content.'

Jolley talks about her early life in England and her experiences as a nurse-trainee at the end of WWII, and applies her experiences to some of her characters who do not claim victory, but only 'hold out'.
