Notes

  • English translation of the title: When I met Văn Cao
  • Văn Cao (1923-95) was the composer of the Vietnamese national anthem, and a talented painter. He was involved in a political scandal requesting freedom of expression in Hanoi in 1954-56, for which he was punished by the authorities. This article criticises those Hanoians who projected discrimination toward Văn Cao, and told the author not to visit Văn Cao in the early 1990s.
