Before embarking on an important journey, Prince Hassan seeks advice from the sage Serjabil. Hassan is initially angered at the commonplace nature of the advice he receives. However, during the course of his journey, as events unfold, Hassan comes to recognise the wisdom of Serjabil's three tenets : 'Pry into no man's business' ; 'Keep the main road' ; 'Govern your passions'.

  • Author's note: 'The three pieces of advice upon which the following story is founded, have been familiar to the mind of the writer since childhood - whence they come he knows not, neither is it material. Thinking them good, he has striven to dress them in a garb that may render them attractive, and so secure the end desired - a careful perusal.
