AbstractHistoryArchive Description

'Under the Mango Tree provides a fascinating glimpse into the history of Darwin and the Top End from an Indigenous perspective. The contributors speak frankly about their lives, from pre World War II years to the present day. From joy of 'mixed-race' dances at the Sunshine Club, midnight mango raids, and the smell of satay outside Darwin's Star Theatre, to the anguish of 'half-caste' children separated from their families, this collection evokes a contrasting picture of racial harmony and prejudice. Ultimately it is a record of the strength and diversity and a tribute to the Indigenous families who contributed greatly to the life of the Northern Territory and continue to do so...' (Back cover)
