Cicely is promised to Ferdinand, but when her cousin from Australia, Griffeth, comes to live in England, she transfers her affections to him. The two men vie for her attentions, and when Ferdinand proves himself to be controlling and violent, Griffeth must rescue Cicely from him. The story ends in a dramatic climax when Ferdinand falls to his death from a cliff after a tussle.
