Banned in Australia

NAA Source: C4226; 'The Naked Lunch' folder
Censorship notes: The Naked Lunch was prohibited by Customs officials in 1960. It was first sent to the National Literature Board of Review in 1963. The prohibition was changed to a restricted circulation after a review was requested by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Adelaide on 16 June 1967.
Censorship notes: The title was released from prohibition on 27.07.1973. The release was prompted by a member of the public, who introduced his 1972 request to Customs Minister Don Chipp by welcoming the liberalisation of book censorship during the Minister's term in office. The correspondent went on to state that '...the reason for the ban in Australia seems somehow related to the fact that Mr. Burroughs is a junkie. I need not remind you that Henry Lawson was an alcoholic, and his face is on the $10 note; fairly widely published.'
