AbstractHistoryArchive Description

Eidolon: the Journal of Australian Science Fiction and Fantasy delivered groundbreaking work by some of speculative fiction's biggest names during the 1990s. In this original anthology, editors Strahan and Byrne present 17 stories that range from powerful, moving and disturbing to funny. The authors are World Fantasy Award Winners Margo Lanagan and Jeff VanderMeer; Hugo and Nebula Award winner Eleanor Arnason; Campbell Award winner Elizabeth Bear; and Nebula and Campbell nominee Tim Pratt; along with Hal Duncan, Lucy Sussex, Kim Westwood, Holly Phillips, Carol Ryles, Grace Dugan, Deborah Biancotti, Simon Brown, Chris Lawson, Alistair Ong, Deborah Roggie and William R. Eakin.

  • Margo Lanagan's 'A Fine Magic,' which finished 15th in the 2007 Locus Awards for Best Short Story, won the 2006 Aurealis Award for Best Fantasy Short Story. The same awards saw Simon Brown's 'Leviathan' and Deborah Biancotti's 'The Dying Light' nominated for Best Young-adult Short Story, while Chris Lawson's 'Hieronymous Boche' and Lucy Sussex's 'The Revenant' were nominated for Best Horror Short Story and Best Fantasy Short story respectively.
  • Positioned 25th in the 2007 Locus Awards for Best Anthology, Eidolon 1 was also shortlisted for a 2007 Ditmar Award (Best Collected Work), but lost out to Bill Congreve and Michelle Marquardt's The Year's Best Australian Science Fiction & Fantasy : Volume Two.
