BiographyHistory

Born and raised in Perth, Western Australia, Jeremy G. Byrne co-founded the independent small press Eidolon Publications with Jonathan Strahan in 1990. It initially published Eidolon: The Journal of Australian Science Fiction and Fantasy (1990-2000) before branching out into the book market in 1996. In addition to co-editing the Eidolon journal Byrne co-edited a number of anthologies with Strahan, including The Year's Best Australian Science Fiction and Fantasy (1996), The Year's Best Australian Science Fiction and Fantasy, Volume 2 (1997) and Eidolon 1 (2006).

As an author Byrne published the short fiction story Tizzy's Tail (1990) and a number of essays for Eidolon, including 'Big Blue Was Watching You' (1990), 'Now is the Time' (1991), 'Now is the Time (Again)' (1991), 'Editorial' (Spring 1991), 'From the Lands Beyond the Hill' (1992), 'Directions' (1992, with Jonathan Strahan), 'Awards, Holidays and Gender Issues' (1993), 'Ch-ch-ch-changes' (1999) and 'Editorial: Not Just Another Decade' (2000). His co-interview with author Greg Egan was also published in Eidolon (1994, with Jonathan Strahan).

Eidolon: the Journal of Australian Science Fiction and Fantasy delivered groundbreaking work by some of speculative fiction's biggest names during the 1990s. In this original anthology, editors Strahan and Byrne present 17 stories that range from powerful, moving and disturbing to funny. The authors are World Fantasy Award Winners Margo Lanagan and Jeff VanderMeer; Hugo and Nebula Award winner Eleanor Arnason; Campbell Award winner Elizabeth Bear; and Nebula and Campbell nominee Tim Pratt; along with Hal Duncan, Lucy Sussex, Kim Westwood, Holly Phillips, Carol Ryles, Grace Dugan, Deborah Biancotti, Simon Brown, Chris Lawson, Alistair Ong, Deborah Roggie and William R. Eakin.

Taking its name from the tiny winged creature found on ancient Greek vases, Eidolon: The Journal of Australian Science Fiction and Fantasy was conceived by a group of individuals who came together for the first time during Swancon XV, the fifteenth annual Western Australian Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention. Published out of North Perth, Western Australia by Eidolon Publications, itself founded by Jonathan Strahan and Jeremy G. Byrne, a total of 26 issues were published between 1990 and 2000.

Issues 1-4 were edited by the Eidolon Editorial Committee comprising Byrne, Strahan, Robin Pen, Richard Scriven, Strahan, Keira McKenzie and Chris Stronach. Issues 5-24 were jointly edited by Scriven, Strahan and Byrne. Strahan and Byrne continued as editorial partners through issues 25/26-28, and Byrne was the sole editor of the final issue 25/26.
