Notes

  • Author's note: For whilst Francis of Assissi is well known, respected and venerated, very few, even in his own country, have heard of Francis James McGarry, layman, mystic, friend of the leper and the poor and of the Australian native...The purpose of this book is to do what McGarry himself would never have permitted - to publicise his work - and the story is true in every respect excluding dialogue which was rarely recorded. Except where documented, conversation is invented.
  • Acknowledgements: 'This book has been compiled, in the main, from a remarkable series of six hundred and twenty six letters written by Frank McGarry in the form of a daily journal and sent from the Norrthern Territory to his relatives in Manly...' Frank O'Grady.
