BiographyHistory

In 1956, Walter Stone established a printing and publishing business, Wentworth Press, with sons, Peter and Walter (junior), brother Ted Stone, and from 1968 a business partner Frank Rups. Other family members also worked at the printery for a time, including son, D'Arcy Stone (q.v.) and daughters-in-law, Margaret (Sampson) Stone and Patricia Stone. At the outset, Wentworth Press rented rooms at 343 Sussex Street, Sydney - adopting the business name of the previous tenants who had gone out of business. It later acquired larger premises at 48 Cooper Street, Surry Hills in 1960. In 1971, the printery was moved to Marrickville, although the office remained in Cooper Street until Walter Stone's death in 1981 when it also was relocated to Marrickville.

Wentworth Press published three substantial series - Australia Past and Present, Studies in Australian Bibliography, and Studies in Australian and Pacific History - together with 121 other books, prior to being taken over by a larger printery in 1985. Its list included both non-fiction, including several titles on Australian children's literature, and literary titles. Wentworth Press also printed Southerly from 1962, and published and distributed it from 1972 when the English Association took it over from Angus and Robertson, which had been its publisher since 1944.
