Notes

  • Described by Paul Depasquale as 'an anti-romantic satire' (A Critical History of South Australian Literature 1836-1930, 93), the novel is introduced by a fictional account of how the author 'Saunders McTavish' found the manuscript of the story beside a man who had been 'living in a semi-retired state with the blacks on the Darling for many years, and was known as "Cranky Bob", or "The Doctor", but no clue could be obtained as to his real name or connections' (Preface).
  • Published in Aid of the Funds of the Wentworth Hospital.
