Set in Paris from 1818-1824, this novel depicts the artistic vision of French artist Theodore Gericault and the embodiment of that vision in the painting The Raft of the Medusa. The Medusa was a French government vessel that foundered off the West African coast. While some passengers reached shore on smaller boats, 150 people were consigned to a raft. After thirteen days adrift, only fifteen were rescued alive. - Back cover
