'Mattheus' novel consists of what might be termed a narrative stock-taking of the Australian landscape and of the Australian way of life. Its humour is derived from the exotic and incongruous, the foreign and antipodean; the adventure is modelled on American westerns and Colonial exploration....Only once does the novel depart from the predictable listing of 'exotic' Australiana.'
