Harry White is a violent alcoholic and a patient at Kilkala, a mental hospital. After six years, Harry is ready to face the world again – although he has no desire to return to his wife; it is her sister Julia whom he had really loved.
What Harry does not know is that Julia has an inborn fear of the mentally ill, and fights off his advances with a carving knife.
For Harry, this is the crisis-point of his life: can he surmount the effect of this act of violence and convince the authorities of his sanity? Or is he to be condemned to live his life in faceless oblivion?
