English romance and family saga. Philippa Craven accepts the offer of marriage made by her father's employer, Martin Deverill, that will save her father's job and provide money to educate and support the rest of the Craven family. She chooses to deal with this unknown man and wayward children - as a career and experiment, preferable to typewriting. She transforms Mr Deverill, formerly cold and embittered by his first marriage to an actress, and his home, winning the love of his son and even of his wayward daughter, Alicia, who is tempted away from home by her her ambition and love for her mother, and a scheming family of cheap stage performers who promise to assist her. Years later, a broken woman with a child and a hopeless marriage, Alicia returns at Christmas time to find a loving home, and a place waiting for her and her child. She reforms, her lost voice returns, and she sings for the glory of God. Philippa, loved wife and mother of two, is 'justified' in her choice of the home. Promotes home as true woman's sphere. (PB)
