An American/English traveller and a British army captain's daughter meet in Switzerland and silently declare their love with an edelweiss. Her father separates them by falsely telling the suitor his daughter is already engaged. They are eventually revisited through a lace design of edelweiss she makes when forced to earn a living in England through her father's poverty and illness. (PB)
In Sacramento USA in the 1850s a sailor, delayed for a night on his journey to San Francisco deposits his gold in the bank. A financial collapse overnight renders his receipt worthless and he eventually disappears overboard on the voyage home. His fellow passengers redeem his money for his family ... competent, simple. English suspense romance. A small English village seems peaceful until the simple church bell-ringer and organ-blower unknowingly fall in love with the graceful organist. Her adopted father's death and her fiancee's inheritance of his money in view of their forthcoming marriage free Clara to marry the doctor - and on opening her legacy of the silver casket, justice is restored. Entertaining. Includes an interlude of 'body contact' as Clayton teaches the heiress to row. (PB)

English/Australian romance at sea. In England, a sea captain and a governess meet, she fallen into reduced circumstances since their childhood. He suggests she accompany him to Melbourne on his next trip with the 'Edinburgh Castle', disguised as a widow, and with his help win a husband. She loves him but her pride will not reveal it until the night the ship is struck by a steamer ... Light intensity. (PB)

A Sydney miser kills his beaten wife on the eve of leaving him and buries her with his money in the scrawny strawberry bed of his hovel. Mark Sinclair, the dead woman's twin brother and her son solve the case. Ironic comments from the author on twin brother character. (PB)
