y separately published work icon Verandah no. 34 2019 19148518 2019 periodical issue 'One of the things no-one ever told me to expect as a professional writer was how many conversations about publishing are deeply Melancholy. We hear over and over again how X market is depressed, or Y just isn't selling any more, or how no-one's buying Z in this economy. Asking someone at an industry event how they are can be a fraught experience, because the state of the industry and the state of the individual get so frequently confused. "How are you going?' I remember casually asking someone at a professional conference once, to which I received the very un-casual reply, 'I'm a failed author - I can barely sell a single book.' (Foreword introduction)
y separately published work icon Verandah no. 33 2018 18873065 2018 periodical issue 'I first encountered Verandah as an undergraduate student, and then as a member of the editorial team. Like many students I did not understand the value and necessity of literary anthologies until I began reading them voraciously and obsessively. We read so many articles, tweets, and messages every day, but we rarely read stanzas, poems, paragraphs or stories like the ones selected for this anthology, that call forth the world at its most mundane or absurd in one line, and at its most devastating in the next: lines and stanzas that compel you to learn them by heart. For those emerging writers reading this journal, I'm not sure enough emphasis is placed on reading the work of people that are writing around you and emerging with you. It is a generous and worthwhile undertaking and I encourage you to do it more, starting here with this anthology.' (Hayley Elliott-Ryan, Foreword introduction)
y separately published work icon Verandah no. 32 2017 11968654 2017 periodical issue Brought to you by this passionate and highly focused team of young editors and designers, Verandah 32 not only directs the spotlight onto boundary-breaking writing, trending to the experimental, but its also innovative in its dual modality. This year, the print version of the journal shows the prize winners for both written and graphic contributions, along with an editors' selection, while the e-edition extends this offering with some additional longer pieces. The visual art here ranges from the virtuosic elegance of Kellie Jane's almost synesthetic flower sequence, through Charles Thompson's photographic performance of 'masculine' trades, the imaginative whimsy of Caleb Lun's 'Found' and Rhys Purton's 'Journal Page' to the boundary-crossing provocation, of which the celebratory Warhol-esque conceit of Orange is the New Black's 'Lola' is emblematic. (Foreword introduction)

'Verandah started with a simple premise—that students at Deakin University (then Victoria College) should have an opportunity to publish their poetry, fiction and non-fiction, alongside the work of established writers and artists, knowing that all submissions would be critically evaluated and the final pieces selected on merit. As young writers ourselves, we also wanted to investigate the editing and publishing process, and recognise the creative role that editors and publishers play in honing a work and creating a collection.'
