At the centre of this story of family life is the contrast between the deadpan, phobic Kay and the manic, excessive Dawn (Sweetie). The film explores aspects of Australian life and the Australian psyche, and probes into the viewer's consciousness by showing the narrow boundary between eccentricity, madness, and normality.

Based on the book by Miles Franklin, this feature film tells the story of an Australian country girl who, at the end of the nineteenth century, wants to make her own way in the outside world.

Rejecting an offer of marriage from a wealthy suitor (who is also her childhood friend), she instead finds herself obligated to work off her father's debt to a neighbouring family, for whom she works as governess and housekeeper. Returning home, she again rejects her suitor's proposal, this time in favour of writing a novel based on her experiences.

Waiting is an irreverent comedy of errors and expectations in which Claire, artist and mother-to-be, becomes the subject of a grand plan. In her isolated farmhouse in an idyllic bush setting, she awaits what she hopes will be the perfect home birth, while her three girlfriends (with their various men, children, and animals) converge from various directions to assist. The chaos that results is a far cry from the girls' reunion Claire had hoped for. In fact, nothing goes according to plan.
