Notes

  • With the exception of the title piece, this is a collection of earlier plays, each with separate title-page and pagination, being bound up from the sheets of their respective earlier printings. It is possible that the title play was issued prior to this collection because an undated separate printing exists.

  • Designed as a prologue to the performance of a tragedy "... for cinema and stage combined, [this play is] in blank verse intended to be spoken uninterruptedly by successive different voices to suggest the concentration of all time and space ... with the basic suggestion that the artistic interpretation of life is its only meaning...." (Miller & Macartney p.43).
